9½ sts + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with A. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

PATTERN STITCH
K1, P1 Rib
Row 1: *K1, p1; repeat from *.
Row 2: K the k sts and p the p sts.
Repeat Row 2 for K1, p1 Rib.

NOTES:

Editor’s Note: When creating fringe using Homespun please note that because of the texture of the yarn the fringe will fray when cut. If you prefer a non-frayed look you can knot the ends, knit or crochet a fringe, or use hairspray or fray check.

BACK
Beg at neck opening with straight needles and A, cast on 28 (36, 46, 50) sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: K 2, purl to last 2 sts, k 2.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 8 (12, 16, 17) in. (20.5 (30.5, 40.5, 43) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Decrease 1 st each edge every other row 6 (6, 8, 9) times – 16 (24, 30, 32) sts/ Work even until piece measures 12 (16, 21, 23) in. (30.5 (40.5, 53.5, 58.5) cm) from beg, end with a RS row. Work in Garter st (k every row) for 3 rows. Bind off all sts loosely.

UNDERPANEL
Beg at neck opening with straight needles and A, cast on 4 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: K 1, inc in each of next 2 sts, k 1 – 6 sts.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: K 2, inc in each of next 2 sts, k 2 – 8 sts.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: K 2, inc in next st, p to last 3 sts, inc 1, k 2.
Repeat last 2 rows 1 (3, 5, 6) more times – 12 (16, 20, 22) sts.
Next Row: Knit.
Next Row: K 2, p to last 2 sts, k 2.
Repeat last 2 rows until piece measures 8 (12, 16, 17) in. (20.5 (30.5, 40.5, 43) cm) from beg, end with a RS row. Work in Garter st for 3 rows. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING
Sew sides of Underpanel to Back, leaving a 2 (2½, 3, 3½) in. (5 (6.5, 7.5, 9) cm) opening at widest point of Underpanel on each side for front legs.

Collar
From RS with double-pointed needles and A, beg at center of cast-on edge of Underpanel, pick up and k 24 (32, 40, 42) sts evenly spaced around neck. Divide sts onto 4 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work 5 rnds in K1, p1 Rib.
Next Row: At end of last round, turn work to beg working back and forth in rows. Work 3 rows in K1, p1 Rib. Bind off in rib.

Leg Opening Edging
From RS with double-pointed needles and A, pick up and knit 10 (12, 14, 14) sts evenly spaced around leg opening. Divide sts onto 4 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Work 2 rnds in K1, p1 Rib. Bind off in rib.

Tail
From RS with straight needles and A, pick up and k 4 sts along center of lower edge of Back. Work in Garter st for 6 in. (15 cm). Bind off all sts loosely.

Tassel
With one strand each of B, C and D held together, wrap yarn around 5 in. (12.5 cm) cardboard 4 times. Cut a 12 in. (30.5 cm) length of A and thread into large-eyed blunt needle. Insert needle under all strands at upper edge of cardboard. Pull tightly and knot securely. Cut yarn loops at lower edge of cardboard. Cut a 6 in. (15 cm) length of D and wrap tightly around loops 1½ in. (4 cm) below top knot to form Tassel neck. Knot securely; thread ends onto needle and weave ends to center of Tassel. Trim Tassel ends evenly. Sew Tassel to end of Tail.

Mane
Cut 12 in. (30.5 cm) lengths of B, C and D. For each fringe, hold one strand each of B, C and D together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through edge of piece, forming a loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten. Attach fringe in every st along edge of neck and front neck opening. Attach fringe in every other st on inner and outer sides of collar about½ in. (1.5 cm) below neck edge. Trim fringe to emphasize mane shape.
